Brook Yeshitila Born in 1982 in Addis Ababa, Brook Yeshitila is a very talented self-taught full time studio artist. He started drawing and painting at an early age. He excels in painting, sculpture, installation and relief works. What makes Brook an extraordinary artist is his ability to pursue his creativity irrespective of his extreme physical condition suffers from a joint disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) that has left him totally stiff and paralysed except for his hands and, has been bedridden since 2000. He lives his life with philosophy and great positive attitude, thus becoming an inspiration to all. Brook strongly believes in the power of the mind and positive thinking. His artworks reflect his concerns regarding the environment, human behaviour and the universe at large. He contemplates on keeping one’s mind and soul clean at all times, the full responsibility that one has for a constructive life, the importance of joining hands together to bring peace, harmony and equality amongst all humankind. Brook paints in oil and enjoys working on large canvases. For sculpture and relief work, he uses mainly broken glass, sand, gravel and soil that he manipulates dexterously to create splendid, harmonious, and at the same time, thought provoking masterpieces. He also painstakingly gives titles to each of his artwork, in such a way that the viewer captures his messages. Brook had his first solo show entitled The Thirteen Months at Asni Gallery from 4 November 2011 to 10 December 2011 where he presented a body of work that focused on the need to constantly renew one’s commitments to one’s self. He also participated in the group show entitled Mind Over Matter held at Asni Gallery in June 2011. Brook can be reached at brook.yeshitila @yahoo.com, 0910045427, www.
