Home Remedies

Gas is a normal byproduct of digestion. The main causes of flatulence are swallowing large amounts of air while eating or drinking and when bacteria located in the colon ferments carbohydrates that did not properly break down in the small intestine. Intestinal gas is made up of much of the same gases in the environment such as hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and methane. There are many natural treatments to remedy this condition.

Herbal Treatments
• Herbal supplement dosages are determined based on therapeutic range. This is the smallest dose that provides any benefit to the largest dose that is safe for human consumption. Do not exceed recommended amounts.

Angelica oil and caraway oil both help stop feelings of fullness, flatulence, and spasm of the gastrointestinal tract. Take either in 10 to15 drops in ¼ cup of water. Chen-pi, also known as bitter orange in tea form relieves belching, bloating, and gas. Cinnamon oil alleviates bloating, cramps, and gas. Use 10 to15 drops in ¼ cup of water. Dandelion tincture removes feeling of fullness and gas. Take ½ teaspoon in ¼ cup of water. Do not use dandelion if you have gallstones. Fennel seed relieves fullness, gas, and bloating. Use 4 to 5 drops of oil in ¼ cup of water. Gentian bitters capsules alleviate bloating and gas after eating excessive amounts of fatty meats. Take as directed on the label. Hops alleviate stress induced digestive issues. Take 500 to 1,000 milligram three times a day. Do not use hops if you have an estrogen sensitive disorder like breast cancer or endometriosis. Horehound tea inhibits gas and a feeling of fullness.

Other Suggestions
• Rocking back and forth either in a rocking chair or in any sitting position can help relax the abdominal muscles and help gas pass more easily. A mixture of water and baking soda or castor oil and milk can also ease the passage of gas. Chewing on peppermint leaves or a piece of fresh ginger immediately after a meal can help prevent gas. They contain substances that relax the digestive muscles. Any kind of movement is also helpful such as going for a walk.

Traditional and Alternative Therapies

Before modern western medicine came to Ethiopia people generally depended on traditional herbal medicine. Many people still make use of traditional therapies, especially in the country side where they may not have access to other options: In Ethiopia traditional medicine is largely associated with individual religious beliefs and some deacons, from the church are known to prescribe herbs or leaves to troubled patients. Not many traditional medicine practitioners carry out medication outside the religious context, but there are a handful of reliable experts who have learnt the treasured art of natural medicine from elder masters. Ethiopia also now has a growing number of alternative and complementary therapists, such as acupuncturists, chiropracters, and reflexologists who have established clinics here.
