Ethiopia Reads is on a mission to create a culture of reading across Ethiopia. Since its founding in 1998, the nonprofit has worked to increase access to books and literacy resources, empowering communities and transforming lives through reading.
Partnering with local communities, Ethiopia Reads has planted over 80 libraries throughout Ethiopia and developed one of the country’s most effective peer-mentoring and educator training programs. These libraries serve as learning hubs, equipped not just with books, but also with trained librarians who inspire curiosity and critical thinking among young readers.
The organization’s vision is rooted in the belief that reading is a foundational skill for individual and societal growth. By nurturing strong reading habits early, Ethiopia Reads hopes to develop a more literate, capable, and resourceful generation of future leaders.
Each year, Ethiopia Reads reaches over 250,000 children, offering access to quality educational resources in both urban and rural areas. In 2019, the organization launched the National Children’s Reading Summit, now Ethiopia’s leading professional forum focused on literacy, children’s books, and educational quality.
In 2024, Ethiopia Reads took a significant step forward by publishing the first-ever bibliography of Ethiopian children’s books. The organization also supports local authors, illustrators, and publishers, helping to grow Ethiopia’s children’s literature scene.
Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ethiopia Reads is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and holds a Platinum rating from Guidestar, recognizing its commitment to transparency and impact. With a dedicated team and a network of supporters, Ethiopia Reads continues to be a leader in education, literacy, and community empowerment.
