Ethiopian news reporter Abel Birhanu who has gained popularity on his self-titled YouTube channel has accumulated more than 2 million subscribers and over 290 million views. He posts commentary on current events, focusing especially on news in Ethiopia. He launched his YouTube channel in August 2018.
Coming from his hometown, Alem Gena, to standing on a global stage representing his country, he reflects that it has been an incredible journey. At the prestigious Africa Golden Awards 2026 in Nairobi held recently, he expressed his gratitude for the award on his social media channels, noting his journey from using a simple phone camera to gaining continental recognition.
When Abel started out, all he had was a vision to see the world and a passion to share stories with an audience. “To see those small efforts blessed by the Almighty and recognized by my own continent, Africa, is a joy I can’t quite put into words.” said Abel. In his grateful acceptance speech he acknowledged that the award isn’t just his, that it belongs to all of his followers and to all of his supporters and those who cheered him on from the sidelines.
