Cristina De Luca has lived in Ethiopia for 10 years along with her family. 20 years ago, while studying architecture in Rome, she met fellow student Ethiopian Ettore; they married 12 years ago and have 2 beautiful daughters.
Cristina reflects that while born and raised in Rome, living a normal and lovely life, something was always missing. By nature, she had always been intolerant of rules and regulations and so she felt as if she was trapped in a kind of cocoon. However, after visiting Ethiopia she started to free herself.
After their master degrees in architectural design, the couple decided to move and settle in Ethiopia. Motivated by solid values of honesty, community and positivism, it was initially quite challenging having to adapt to a different way of working and thinking. But the most important thing was becoming masters of their own lives and with a mere 200 euros in their pockets, perseverance and determination, they were able to launch their own architectural company (4D Studio), followed by a furniture factory.
Cristina is now running her own textile business AURADORO CROSS-CULTURAL FASHION: creating bags, accessories and clothing using Ethiopian handwoven fabrics, mixed with premium quality leather combining all the colourful and cultural aspects of living in international Addis promoting cultural exchanges at different levels.
“We love to mix our fabrics and designs to create something unique including collaborating with
local artisans and creating a strong community based on unity in diversity. My dream is to grow together with all the people working with us, being able to export our products to other African countries, showing the beauty of handwoven Ethiopian fabrics.”
