A street-art competition has been launched by the Delegation of the European Union to the African Union. The initiative will involve street artists from Africa and Europe to visualise dialogue, open-mindedness, human dignity, and mutual respect between Africa and Europe. Through the universal language of art the aim is to bring the two continents together.

Born in Madagascar in 1943, Dr Jember Tefera finished elementary school in Ethiopia and her secondary and university education in Great Britain. She received a master’s degree in Primary Health Care (PHC) and M.Phil. from the University of Manchester. “I saw poverty restricting people from getting medical care, that’s why I wanted to study it.”

Khat, a flowering plant with leaves that produce a stimulant effect when chewed, has been harvested in Ethiopia for centuries. With social significance in communities around the world, khat is a cash crop, sustaining many who have worked in the fields for generations. Filmed in luminous black-and-white, “Faya Dayi” traces the harvesting of khat, by
