Congratulations to Michael Metaferia for Best Photographer of Wildlife and Nature 2023 Award
Michael Metaferia is a travel photographer, who contributes regular travel features for What’s Out. We are delighted that he has been awarded the Best Photographer of Wildlife and Nature 2023 by the Oromia Tourism Commission. Michael extended his sincere thanks to “Visit Oromia” for this prestigious recognition, acknowledging the Commissioner, Lelise Dhugaa for her unwavering support and dedication to the preservation, promotion and development of Ethiopian wildlife and natural resources. Michael credits her for paving the way for photographers to showcase the captivating essence of Ethiopia’s diverse landscape and wildlife.
Michael has exhibited his work in several exhibitions. Inspired by his father, Metaferia Ayele, a renowned photographer for the Ethiopian Tourism Commission (later named Ministry of Culture and Tourism) for nearly three decades, Michael was inclined towards a career in tourism and photography (despite studying Mining Engineering in college) and thus embarked on a career as a travel photographer.
Michael says that his role model was definitely his father who captured timeless photographs that showcased the wonders of Ethiopia and promoted its tourism destinations. That commitment and love for Ethiopia that Michael grew up witnessing as a boy has always been his guiding light and he is indebted to his father for instilling such a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature and wildlife of his beloved Ethiopia.
Michael has exhibited his work in several exhibitions and he currently works as a freelance travel photographer for tour companies, government institutions, NGO’s and international filmmakers. “I strive to promote Ethiopia as a captivating tourist destination through photography, with a deep appreciation for my country’s natural wonders and cultural treasures; I endeavor to share its hidden beauty with the world”.
