Nabu Strives To Protect And Promote The Kaffa Biosphere Reserve

Bonga, the capital of the Kaffa Zone, also serves as the administrative hub for the South West Ethiopia Peoples’ Regional State (SWEPRS). Its strategic administrative role complements its growing importance in tourism and sustainable development.

The goal of ‘The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU)’ is to protect Kaffa’s Afromontane cloud forests and their unique biological diversity. For over a decade, NABU has been at the forefront of promoting ecotourism in the Kaffa Biosphere. This German organization has been cooperating with the Ethiopian government as well as with other national and international partners since 2006. Numerous projects aim to stop deforestation, promote sustainable regional development, create new sources of income for the local population and raise environmental awareness. These include hotels, local tour guides, and coffee houses, with the involvement of international tourism advisors. Additionally, NABU has facilitated familiarization trips for national and international tour operators, supported the identification and development of key tourist attractions, and promoted the region as a unique travel destination.
