Standing By Children Then, Now, And Always
SOS Children’s Villages began its work in Ethiopia in 1974, establishing the first SOS Children’s Village in Mekelle Programme Location in response to the devastating drought in the northern region. Since then, its reach has grown significantly. Today, it operates across eight regional states—Tigray, Amhara, Harari, Oromia, Southern Ethiopia, Sidama, Central Ethiopia, and Somali—as well as in the city administrations of Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa.
SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia currently runs nearly 40 projects nationwide, providing holistic care and support to children and families in need. From emergency relief in conflict-affected areas to inclusive education, disability support, youth empowerment, alternative care and family and community strengthening, SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia is a lifeline to many.
A standout initiative, now marking its 10th year, is the EDUCARE project—launched to address school dropout rates in the Amhara region. EDUCARE has since expanded across Debretabor, Debremarkos, Woldia, and Gondar. To date, it has benefited the lives of nearly 123,000 children and caregivers in the region by integrating education, community, and family-based solutions.
On June 16th and 17th, 2025, SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia will celebrate “A Decade of Hope and Impact,” honouring the EDUCARE project’s lasting contribution to education and empowerment. This milestone is especially significant as the initiative expands to Waliso, following the successful completion of its operations in Nekemte—where over 1,500 individuals have been positively impacted, equipping nearly 1,000 children with essential life skills and enabling 90% of them to access improved educational opportunities, while significantly reducing school dropout rates.
In a time of rising needs and limited resources, children cannot wait. Help us continue this mission—partner, volunteer, become a sponsor or spread the word.
Be part of the change!
