Are Third Spaces The New Youth Hubs ?

Building communities and fostering cultural literacy among the youth

“Third spaces” or places other than home to unwind and have meaningful conversations become essential as nowadays, human connection is scarce.

Videobet is such a “Third space”. It is an arthouse cinema and film center based in Addis Ababa around Meskel square, on the first floor of the Red Terror Martyr’s Museum.

In an interview with the co-founder of Videobet, Bandamlak Yimenu, he explained that he and his co-founder initially established it as a film club but by popular demand upgraded it to a cinema that screens older films, mainly African led films and other international classics.

Videobet is “a place to commune with other like-minded people and a place to inspire.”  This is reflected in the post-movie discussions and Q&As they host, enabling the audience to exchange thoughts and form more ideas beyond the films.

Bandamlak stated that they intend to have more free screenings in addition to the discounts they already have for students. By making it more accessible to a wider range of people, it builds up an opinionated audience, generally creating a space for people of all backgrounds.
