The Tea Room on Haile Selassie Street in Piassa has been an iconic landmark pastry and tea house since 1952. It is famous for introducing modern café culture, offering traditional Ethiopian black tea, and serving vintage-style pastries.
The Tea shop emerged during a period of modernization in Piassa, an area originally developed with modernist architecture in the 1930s and is closely linked to the early introduction of Italian-influenced pastries and social gathering habits in the capital.
It remains a living piece of Addis Ababa’s heritage maintaining a heritage vibe amidst the city’s ongoing corridor development, frequented by families, couples, friends meeting up and diaspora visiting the place they fondly remember frequenting.
The restaurant is upstairs serving
pasta, pizza and traditional fare and
the cafe is downstairs serving coffee,
drinks and pastries.
