Evolution Of Interior Design With Social Media

Just design is no longer enough. Today, when designing a space we have to consider
more than just good design. Today, as designers we need to take into consideration the
clients’ marketing needs, psychology and anthropology.

With the rise of social media comes digital footprint, digital awareness and digital
marketing. I believe with social media came two evolutions in the interior design industry;
on the one hand, using social media as a design tool to help both the client and designers visualize ideas
as well as ignite creativity, and on the other hand, there is a demand from the client to create
designs that are not only functional and sustainable with a positive atmosphere but we are driven to
create ‘instagrammable’ places.

Instagrammable: ‘visually appealing in a way that is suitable for being photographed for
posting on the social media application Instagram’.

The instagrammable movement is exceptionally strong in the hospitality industry where
hotels, cafes and lounges are now using their interior spaces for marketing and
branding purposes. We find good and aesthetically pleasing design in many places,
even here in Addis Ababa. However, beautiful does not necessarily imply
instagrammable.

To create an instagrammable interior, some of the key features include the use of color,
statement pieces, unique furniture types, stylish lighting fixtures and bold decorative
walls. With the generous use of the color pink, the decorative rose wall and the gold
wings, La vie en rose, located in the Bole area has successfully become one of the first
instagrammable cafes in Addis Ababa.
